Cardiio

Jun 13, 2019

Description

Cardiio brands itself as “A simple app to measure your heart rate.” Without getting into the fussiness or technicalities, it may be best to download and use the app for that simple purpose. It is available for free in the App Store. It is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent any condition. The developers have made it clear the app is not a clinical pulse oximeter and is not FDA approved.

Overview

Cardiio works by using your smartphone’s camera to capture slight changes in light. The design was originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is an app developed by Ph.D. scientists/engineers to help monitor wellness through your heart rate.

“It is available for free in the App Store. It is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.”

How Cardiio Works

Blood absorbs light. Every time your heart beats, the blood flow to your face and finger increases and absorbs light. The app uses your smartphone camera to capture changes in light from either your finger or face, thus calculating your heart rate.

Designed at MIT

A lot of the trust we place in the devices we use stem from the areas or institutions where they were designed. While, MIT has not endorsed the Cardiio app, the original design was licensed by and developed at the MIT Media Lab.

Monitor Your Wellness

The developers of Cardiio are a group of Ph.D. scientists and engineers who are devoted to using algorithms to increase wellness in individuals who use their app. In addition to wellness, they also aim to improve fitness and fight chronic diseases through their work.
