So what is a heart attack? So heart attack happens when you have blockages in the arteries that supply the heart muscle with the oxygen and the nutrients it needs to survive. When you have complete blockage of this artery the heart tissue does not get any oxygen and nutrients and it therefore dies. These leads to symptoms of chest pain and discomfort and this is the definition of a heart attack.
